Top 10 Wedding Photographers 2008

Two of our local wedding photographers made the top 10 list in American Photo Magazine. I've had the privilege to work with these two amazing photographers and I can tell you that I'm not at all surprised that they made the list. These two photographers might have different styles but what they have in common is that they love-love-love their art, they have amazing reputations but they are real humble about it, and they enjoy every minute of each wedding! It is nice to see them recognized for their passion. Congratulation SeƱor Ben & Dearest Gene!! I'm so proud of you!

:: BEN CHRISMAN ::
Location: San Francisco Website: benchrisman.com

Ben Chrisman's offbeat style has attracted a clientele that is exactly like him -- young, successful, and a "little odd," he says. Early in his photographic career, Chrisman aspired to be a war photographer. That idea never worked out, and he grudgingly began thinking about shooting weddings. "I got into wedding photography not liking wedding photographers, thinking they were pretty lame," he says. "So I decided to do the opposite of everything they did. I only shoot what I would want to see myself." His dedication to photographing nuptials with a witty eye for detail (a groom taking a smoke break in a parking lot while his decked-out bride sits on a parking barrier) has attracted a steady stream of "charismatic, energetic" clients from all over the United States. "Sometimes I have to convince my clients to do the traditional portraits because I know their parents would get mad at me if I didn't take those shots," he says. Often, his connection with a bride and groom outlasts the wedding day. One couple he photographed ended up inviting him to their home for Thanksgiving years later. "I get to meet really interesting people on the happiest day of their lives," he says. "And they look fantastic."

:: GENE HIGA ::
Location: San Francisco
Website: genehiga.net

Gene Higa had been shooting weddings in the San Francisco Bay Area for several years when he realized that there was a niche in the field that nobody else was filling. "Photographers would say 'available for destination weddings' but no one was really doing it," he says. "No one was focusing on this kind of work in a major way." Higa quickly moved to fill the gap. "Every destination wedding we've done, it's been published," he says, as he rattles off the countries "hanging" on his office wall. Most recently, one of his photos was both featured on the cover and inside the Destination Weddings "World Wide Guide." His new focus has taken him to Mexico, Italy, India, the Philippines, Greece, Peru, Thailand, Spain, Barbados, and Jamaica -- "locations that no one else in our industry has," he says. Paradoxically, this focus on exotic locales has simultaneously raised Higa's "perceived value" in his base city, San Francisco, where he shoots about 30 weddings a year. Higa brings his own stylistic touches to the job, as well. Whereas most photographers take a plethora of shots of the blushing bride, Higa likes to focus on the groom. "I always try to get the cool groom shot. I try to work on the opposite of what everyone else is doing," he says. Higa's Website features a number of strong, solo portraits of grooms alongside his work motto, "Dare to be different." All promotion strategies aside, however, Higa is in the industry because he loves it. "I'm made for this business. I'm very sentimental, I love the art, the dresses; I love every aspect of it. I love the parties, I love the details, I love the client interaction," he says. "I found my calling."

Una Bella Sera - Recap

Last night I was a participating vendor at the swanky event "Una Bella Sera" at the brand new Casa Real at Ruby Hill (ah! still has that new venue smell).

The event was organized by Crystal Lequang of Amazae Events and Nicole Ha. I was so honored when they asked me to be part of it. The event was beautiful and a visual feast everywhere you looked!

The event was a non-booth atmosphere so I was able to enjoy the event and move around meeting with other wedding vendors and friends. Here are a few teaser photos, check out Augie Chang's blog if you want to see more!

Charlene's Review...

I could not have been more delighted with my hair and makeup artist, Maria Chang.

As soon as I hired Maria and her company, Professional Makeup Artistry (PMA), for my wedding on April 12, 2008, I knew I would be in good hands... and I was. Maria is definitely so much more than a phenomenal hair & makeup artist, her additional PMA services set her miles apart from everyone else.

This is a ridiculously long review, but I almost can’t express enough how helpful and wonderful she was to me...and I was not the only one who noticed. My bridesmaids were asking me where I found her. My dad mentioned she was "well worth it" - he simply said that he could just tell that she really cared. My mom already loved her at our first meeting at my trial. She not only loved her own hair & makeup on my wedding day, but was very relieved that Maria was the one to help me in my dress, because she knew Maria would get it right. Mostly, my mom was just appreciative of how well Maria and her assistant, Tanya, took care of me.

Finally, my husband went from not understanding the cost of hair & makeup at all pre-wedding, to saying post-wedding, how great Maria was and what a great deal she was! Maria really makes you look and feel as beautiful as you can be on your wedding day. Our day started at 9am (earlier for her, since she came from Oakley), and she was with me all through the photo session, through the ceremony, until right before the cocktail hour at 6pm.

Among the many things she did for me that day, she touched me up constantly, she carried my train everywhere, she made sure I stayed hydrated, she showed me how to hold my bouquet in pictures, she taught my dad how to lift my veil, and she put blister medication on my feet (if that’s not dedication – I don’t know what is!).

I loved her whole team – they were just fun to have around, which made things more relaxed for me. Maria brought the lovely Sue with her to do hair & makeup too, due to the number of my ladies getting services done. Tanya, her tiny assistant, was so helpful as well - I could not believe such a small women could carry such a huge backpack with her everywhere! My husband said that backpack was like magic, it seemed to hold anything we could possible need.

Finally, not only did Maria deliver her services with perfection, she was one of the most professional wedding vendors I worked with post-wedding. She returned phone calls/emails promptly, her contract was solid, she confirmed when she received payment, and she told me exactly what she needed me to do to get ready for the trial and the wedding. She did all this with a sweet demeanor and a smile. To me, this is what a true professional is. I can honestly say Maria was my absolute favorite wedding vendor. I miss her already!

Project SMILE

When Rhee Bevere emailed to ask me to be part of this project, I immediately said yes. The project consist of doing hair & makeup and a photo shoot for victims of domestic violence and their children with the hope that they have a better outlook for their new life; not to mention to give them a day of pampering that is well deserved.

The project was created in collaboration with the Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence organization. Their HomeSafe transitional housing is amazing - it allows those women and children who've escaped abusers to rebuild their lives in a supportive group environment.

I had the privilege to be assigned to work with Makeup Artist Sarah Hyde and great photographers such as Kim of Mill Cottage Photography, Angela of AGB Photographics, Chyna of Chyna D. Photography, and Shannon Montez.

I wish we could show the amazing pictures we took of the families but for their protection we can not show them. For more on this story visit Rhee Bevere's Blog.

Destination Wedding in St. Helena

*Click on pictures to enlarge*

On a Thursday morning in St. Helena, Helena & Andrew came from Texas to tie the knot in front of their 10 invited guest. The ceremony was so special and intimate, I even felt part of the family! Helena didn't have a trial and I've never met her before but we were in constant communication to make sure we would create the perfect look for her wedding day. The look we designed is romantic & feminine, appropriate for a Napa wedding.

It was also my first time working with Ed & Monica Pingol; I was truly amazed by their unique style and their use of what I called "The magic stick" (a special mounted flash), the results were amazing in every shot. After the short ceremony and delicious luncheon at Press Restaurant, we headed to San Francisco for a long photo shoot. We hit several locations but my favorite is the steep Cliff we had to climb up in order to reach an old tree with exposed roots (as seen in the first picture)... We all had to help the bride climb the tree! As you can see in the picture, the result was amazing... worth the climb!

Modern Bride...

Joannie is a true modern bride. Every detail of her wedding was such an expression of her personality. Her hair and makeup is very young and fresh. I used neutral earth tones and we kept her hair flowy and swept back, simply held by a sparkling crystal pin.

Such creative and modern wedding required a creative and modern photographer! Non other than
Augie Chang to capture images that give the effect of being immersed in the moment. His photography depicts his love of composition that draws the eye to the interplay of light, color and shadow.
Equally amazing, her videographer Justin Fone captured every moment with amazing detail. For video highlights of this wedding CLICK HERE.
